ABB Supports West Coast Wastewater Treatment Plant with Upgraded Distributed Control System

ABB to provide multi-phase upgrade of advanced DCS solution to a major west coast Wastewater Treatment Plant for greater efficiency, reliability and cost savings

Las Vegas, Nevada, - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has won an order to provide a large West Coast Wastewater Treatment Plant with a multi-phase distributed control system (DCS) solution upgrade.

The three-phased program, which also includes DCS services and expertise, is scheduled for completion by 2011. Phases Four and Five will be scheduled for a later date.

This West Coast Wastewater Treatment Plant has utilized ABB DCS technology since 1986.

The wastewater treatment plant ultimately decided to upgrade the DCS solution with a technologically-advanced ABB DCS services platform by agreeing to the first phase of an "Evolution by Enhancement Plan."

ABB recognized the unique needs of the wastewater treatment plant and provided customized DCS services and expertise over the past two years to develop a long-term solution, based on their industry-leading process automation technology. As a result, the wastewater plant is pleased to build on the long-standing partnership with ABB and looks forward to maintaining and improving a distributed control system that is efficient, cost-effective, and reliable.

A DCS is a distributed control system that regulates a process (manufacturing, chemical or other) from a series of strategic positions in the plant, as opposed to a single, centralized control unit. ABB's DCS, System 800xA, is part of a complete set of Industrial IT automation solutions that meet various plant automation and process optimization needs.

"ABB's DCS solution has helped the west coast Wastewater Treatment Plant get maximum value out of their ongoing control system investment with ABB, and this has helped them increase efficiency, reduce energy consumption and save significant cost," said Kevin McAllister, head of ABB's Power Generation business in North America. "We are delighted that the wastewater treatment plant has renewed its partnership with ABB and will continue to utilize our leading-edge technology as they provide a valuable service for west coast taxpayers."

This announcement was made today at PowerGen International 2009, a major power generation conference held this week in Las Vegas.
