ABB Presents Groundbreaking Power Technologies at Paris Show

Products and systems to improve grid reliability and efficiency are highlight of ABB display

Zurich, Switzerland, August 25, 2006: ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is presenting groundbreaking technologies for substation automation, switchgear communication and high-voltage transmission at the week-long Cigré show starting on August 27 in Paris.

Power experts from around the world will be at the Cigré (International Council on Large Electric Systems) conference and exhibition in Paris from August 28th to September 1st, to present papers and share their expertise in workshops and special sessions.

Among the technologies and capabilities that ABB will highlight at the week-long exhibition are three of groundbreaking significance:

A complete portfolio of substation products and systems compliant with IEC 61850

ABB is the first company to offer a complete portfolio of substation products and systems that comply with the new IEC 61850 standard for interoperable communication networks and systems in substations and are based on a common technology platform.

In July, ABB also became the first equipment manufacturer and system integrator to be awarded official Conformance Test Center status to certify products and systems as compliant with the new standard.

ABB has supplied new substations and refurbished existing ones to the new IEC 61850 standard in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, India and Africa, including benchmark installations like the 380/220/110 kV Laufenburg substation in Switzerland, one of the largest and most important in Europe.

E-panel - a revolution in medium-voltage switchgear
Universally recognized as a paradigm shift in communications technology for power distribution systems, ABB's waveguide concept enables medium-voltage switchgear to communicate data via electromagnetic waves without the use of electrical or optical links. Data is transmitted at almost the speed of light and without interference and transmission loss.

ABB is launching the technology in the ZX family of medium-voltage gas insulated switchgear under the name E-panel. Modules equipped with waveguide are able to communicate with their entire environment in accordance with the IEC 61850 standard.

New transmission technology delivers up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power via underground or underwater cables

ABB will unveil the next generation of its HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) Light technology that enables up to 1,000 megawatts of electric power to be delivered via underground or underwater cables at 300 kilovolts (kV).

The threefold increase is made possible by ABB innovations in cable technology and power semiconductors. HVDC Light is environmentally friendly - there is no visual impact, no ground current, no electromagnetic fields - and remains unique to ABB.

The exhibit will be completed by further displays of transmission and distribution products and systems including new Flexible AC Transmission Systems devices, innovations in transformer technology and powerline carriers, which enable power lines to transport data as well as electricity.

In addition, ABB representatives will be presenting research papers and sharing their expertise on key topics throughout the week in areas like power system stability and control, HVDC and power electronics, substation protection and automation.

ABB's exhibit can be found at stand number 57 in the exhibition hall.
