ABB Instrument Transformers to Support Progress Energy Smart Grid Project

ABB to provide Progress Energy with more than 400 HCEP instrument transformers for over 140 substations in the Carolinas

Raleigh, North Carolina, August 25, 2009 - ABB, the leading power and automation
technology company, today announced that Progress Energy has selected ABB's HCEP medium voltage instrument transformers for their Smart Grid implementation plans, confirming the utility's focus on high-quality solutions for the future evolution of the U.S. power grid.

The increased life-expectancy and reliability of these HCEP instrument transformers will help reduce Progress Energy's maintenance costs by minimizing the risks of costly substation power outages, and ultimately improving their Smart Grid reliability.

Over the next 18 months, the ABB operation in Pinetops, NC, will provide installation of more than 400 HCEP instrument transformers at over 140 substations in North and South Carolina.

"The HCEP instrument transformer and its advanced capabilities are a perfect solution for Smart Grid applications," said Jon Rennie, vice president and general manager for instrument transformers at ABB in Pinetops, NC. "ABB is committed to providing Progress Energy, and all of utility customers worldwide, with the most reliable, efficient and technologically-advanced instrument transformers for the emerging Smart Grid."

Since its introduction in 2006, ABB's HCEP (Hydrophobic Cycloaliphatic Epoxy) outdoor medium voltage instrument transformer has become recognized as the most advanced solution for metering and relaying applications, ranging from 5 kV to 52 kV. HCEP is an advanced insulating material designed to improve weatherability and reliability in all outdoor environments.

Each substation will utilize one set of three potential transformers, allowing the Raleigh, NC-based utility to accurately determine substations regulator tap positions. This will keep voltage levels in substations within acceptable and controllable bandwidth, thus avoiding undesirable conditions to occur to their connected customers and providing the accuracy required by Progress Energy's Distribution Management System.
