ABB Drive System Wins the 2009 Science and Technology Achievement Award of CIS

ABB retains the national award and its leading technology is well recognized by an authoritative national institution

Beijing, October 23, 2009 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced recently that its drive system for paper production lines won the China Instrumentation and Control Society 's 2009 Science and Technology Achievement Award, in the Excellent Product Award category. The drive system was produced for the forestry-paper integration project of the Lonfon Paper Industry Co., Ltd. in Puyang, Henan. ABB has won this award for the second consecutive year, for its leading technology and outstanding engineering expertise.

Tobias Becker, Head of the Process Automation Division, North Asia Region and China, said, "ABB is committed to helping customers improve energy efficiency through its world leading automation technology. We are glad to win this award again. It signifies recognition from the industry, as well as local authoritative institutions, for our leading technology and outstanding engineering strength in the automation sector. We will continue to make our contribution to the development of a low-carbon based economy in China."

The ABB drive system for the forestry-paper integration project of Lonfon Paper was commissioned at the end of 2008. The entire drive system saw outstanding performance in terms of the drive device's voltage levels, in-wiring device solutions, communication protocols, programming methods and operation. Specifically, it enables the precise control of the Optiload calendar machine and the application of the ABB Extended Automation System 800xA, to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the production line. In addition, the new system simplifies operation and maintenance while reducing down time dramatically. With advanced equipments including the ABB drive system, customer cuts down energy consumption significantly and improves production efficiency by 40%-50% over the traditional methods.

The forestry-paper integration project of Lonfon Paper. is a key project in Henan Province. It is also an exemplary case in the province's campaign to restructure its paper industry. It is the only forestry-paper integration project approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in China. ABB provided drive systems for one paper machine and two rewinders.

The Science and Technology Achievement Award of the China Instrumentation and Control Society (CIS) was established in 2001. The annual award program was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, authorized by the National Office for Science & Technology Awards, and is presented by CIS to nationwide winners. It is the most recognized award in the academic community, and in the instrumentation and control industry in China.

ABB has won this national award for two consecutive years. In 2008, ABB won two separate 2008 Science and Technology Achievement Awards: one for its drive systems used in the Hunan Juntai Pulp Paper Co. Ltd.'s bleached softwood kraft (BSK) pulp line with annual output of 400,000 tons; and the other for Shandong Haitian Biochemical Co., Ltd.'s soda mill project, with an annual output of one million tons. The Hunan Juntai Pulp Paper Co. Ltd. is a subsidiary of Tiger Forest and Paper Group; and Shandong Haitian Biochemical Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of the Jinjing Group (SGG).
