Government Standards, Military IUID, and individual Industry Regulations dictate that traceability be a part of a wide range of items including electronic components, food products, aviation, military, automotive parts and many more markets. According to ISO 8402, traceability is "the ability to trace the history, application or location of an entity by means of recorded identifications." From the beginning of product to the end of its life cycle the traceability can be easily achievedby accessing records through barcodes and QR Codes, 2D codes.
Direct product marking is the use of labels being applied permanently to the product. Big or small the product needs to be marked. The need for less than .5" x 1" labels is necessary to fit the many tight fitting small surface areas. On a larger scale, Build sheets now require multi part format labels to move with the production (example: 4" x 6" labels with die cut labels within the 4 x 6 area), peeling and adhering the tiny labels as production moves through the manufacturing location. Printing tiny barcodes on these sheets can be challenging in the lower Thermal Transfer DPI machines.
