"Tilted Wave Interferometer" from Mahr Nominated for 2015 Prism Award

-- Novel MarSurf® TWI 60 technology provides fast, highly precise, and very flexible measurement and analysis of aspheric lenses and freeform surfaces

PROVIDENCE, RI -- A new "Tilted Wave Interferometer" technology from Mahr for the optical measurement and analysis of aspheric lenses and freeform surfaces has been nominated for a 2015 PRISM Award of the SPIE (International Society for Optics and Photonics) and Photonics Media. This highly regarded prize is also referred to as the "Photonics Oscar."

Named in the category for "Other Metrology Instrumentation," the MarSurf® TWI 60 Tilted Wave Interferometer (TWI) constitutes a novel, promising and highly flexible interferometer to measure aspheres quickly and with high precision. Due to its very high resolution of high frequency errors and extremely short measuring times, the TWI 60 is particularly suited for the quality assurance of modern optics and as a measuring system in the production process.

Modern algorithms enable the system to adapt to different surface forms without expensive additional accessories such as computer-generated holograms (CGH). Allowable gradient deviations from a best fit sphere can be up to 10 degrees. With a data acquisition time of less than 30 second,s a very high lateral resolution of about 30 µm can be achieved with a surface under test aperture of up to 60 mm. This is accomplished as a single shot measurement without any need for stitching of multiple interferograms.

Mahr developed the technology in conjunction with the Institute for Technical Optics at the University of Stuttgart. Laboratory and functional models were created as part of a BMBF-funded project for optical technologies at the VDI Technology Center. Beta versions of the MarSurf TWI 60 are already in use at selected sites, including the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany, and market introduction is planned for 2016.
