'Greenest' Building Goes Waterless

When the Children's Museum in San Diego closed in 2002 to make way for a new building, which has recently opened, the board decided to set an example by building a facility with an eye to reducing environmental impact.

Large open doors facing San Diego Bay help cool the museum. A tall glass tower in the middle of the building allows warm air to escape upward, encouraging greater circulation and allowing the museum to go without air conditioning.

Other efforts made toward conservation involved water, which is always a concern in southern California. The museum installed water and energy conserving waterless urinals manufactured by Waterless Co. Inc., the oldest manufacturer of waterless urinals in the United States.

All told, the San Diego Union-Tribune says the museum is the "greenest" building in downtown San Diego.
