Voice-Directed Picking Technology

Voice-directed picking technology is set to revolutionize the supply chain industry, upgrading the mechanics of warehouses and distribution centers. Providing a clear channel of communication between associates and warehouse management systems, this new technology is undergirded by strong analytics, optimization software, and improved speech recognition. Successful implementation can significantly boost facility productivity rates and reduce picking errors.

Voice-directed technology gives associates verbal translations of picking orders via Bluetooth headsets. This hands-free feature makes it possible for associates to navigate warehouse aisles without the hassle of RFID scanning, notetaking, and data inputting. By selecting the most efficient picking routes for associates, confirming associate locations with numbered codes, and providing and confirming pick quantities, the picking process is greatly simplified.

Associates can completely focus on the tasks at hand without the need to employ tools like RFID scanners and instruction sheets, which keep workers’ hands occupied and force employees to look away from the picking area, creating room for error.

The technology also ensures better safety and damage control practices, as the picking process is much less cumbersome. Workers only need to be equipped with the tools, such as cutters, that help them safely secure the picks. This reduces the chance of worker injuries and damaged goods.

Training timelines are also shortened, as the technology guides associates through every step of the picking process with clear verbal directives. It’s no longer necessary to train workers on reading order printouts, label application, and data verification via keyboards. Put simply, the job becomes a lot less complicated, allowing workers to maximize their productivity.

Voice-directed picking technology is only used in about a quarter of all the warehouses and distribution centers within the United States. But with recent reports detailing its successful application, it’s sure to become a mainstay soon enough.
