Textron Systems Acquires Robotic Vehicle Maker

Aerospace and defense manufacturer Textron Systems last month announced an agreement to acquire Maine robotics firm Howe & Howe Technologies.

Rhode Island-based Textron said the deal would incorporate Howe & Howe’s expertise in robotic land vehicles and make the company “a global leader in autonomy across the air, land, and sea domains.”

Howe & Howe’s vehicles include a line of small tanks and cargo robots, along with firefighting and medical transport systems. Textron officials said those vehicles would complement its Commando land vehicles as well as its unmanned platforms and control systems.

The deal, the company added, also demonstrated its commitment to and understanding of the U.S. military’s demands for advanced technology.

“Not just anyone can build these vehicles,” Textron Systems President and CEO Lisa Atherton said in a statement. “Bringing together Textron Systems’ and Howe & Howe’s talent, capabilities, and proven products will join two of the best.”

Terms of the acquisition, which is still subject to closing conditions, were not disclosed.
