Tax Package Incentivizes $150M Expansion

Medical device manufacturer Becton Dickinson (BD) recently unveiled plans to invest as much as $150 million into its Sumter, South Carolina manufacturing facility. The 125 new jobs created from this investment will support demand for the company’s growing line of blood collection devices. The facility has been operating in Sumter since 1970 and currently employs 700 workers.

The project has been approved by the Sumter County Council, with support from The LINK economic development alliance, Sumter Economic Development, and the South Carolina Department of Commerce. Becton Dickinson, which is based out of New Jersey, will receive a six percent property assessment ratio for 20 years as long as it follows through with investment plans for the area.

Becton Dickinson will also be eligible for a 25 percent revenue credit for up to 10 years – as long as the company creates a minimum of 75 new full-time jobs within eight years, or a four percent assessment ratio and 25 percent special source revenue credit for 10 years if it invests $150 million and creates 125 new jobs over eight years. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development also approved job development credits related to the project and will set aside a $600,000 grant to assist with roadwork and site preparation costs.
