Iowa State University (ISU) plans to open a new manufacturing laboratory this summer in the campus’ research park.
The university’s Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) and Midwest utility company Alliant Energy announced plans for the ISU Digital Manufacturing Lab last week. Alliant Energy will contribute $100,000 toward the project, the largest private gift ever given to the center.
Officials said the lab would help Iowa businesses explore and evaluate automation technologies, including collaborative robotics and advanced vision systems, before making investments in them.
The facility will also provide an opportunity for center staff to advise companies on new technologies in order to reduce risk and enable these businesses to become more efficient and productive.
Mike O’Donnell, the director of CIRAS’ Manufacturing Extension Partnership program, said the lab would provide “an unbiased source to help manufacturers identify the right technology for them at the right time.”
The Iowa Economic Development Authority also plans to cover equipment purchases and remodeling expenses to construct the lab.
