Japanese Motor Maker Expands in Tennessee

Nidec Motor Corporation, which is based out of Kyoto, Japan, recently announced plans to invest $18 million as the company expands its operations in Lexington, Tennessee. The high-efficiency electric motor manufacturer could also be bringing more than 300 new jobs to the factory as it looks to add products to its current offerings and provide a number of overall facility upgrades. The plant is located about 100 miles west of Nashville.

The governor of Tennessee describes the project as one of the largest economic development announcements for Lexington in seven years. Nidec currently employs about 200 people at the plant, which was originally owned by French electric motor manufacturer Leroy-Somer Americas. Nidec acquired the company for $1.2 billion in August 2016 – right after LSA had laid off 180 workers.

Nidec is considered to be one of the largest electric motor manufacturers in the world. It has customers in the industrial, residential and commercial sectors with applications ranging from appliances to elevators to autonomous vehicles.
