Detroit Automotive Manufacturer Gets $360K Grant for Expansion

American Mitsuba recently received a Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant worth $360,000. The funds will allow the facility to add a new manufacturing line that the company was competing for against another Mitsuba facility in Kentucky.

In total, the new line will demand an estimated $13.5 million investment and create as many as 45 jobs. Winning the grant required multiple conversations and months of coordination between American Mitsuba, Middle Michigan Development Corp. (MMDC), and the City of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, as well as the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC).

“Without MMDC, our expansion may have occurred at our Kentucky plant, not here in Mt. Pleasant,” David Stevens, senior vice president of American Mitsuba Operations said in a press release.

This will be the sixth addition to the original facility, which was built in 1988. The Mt. Pleasant City Commission also approved a 50%, 12-year tax abatement for the addition. American Mitsuba Corp. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mitsuba Corp. The company designs and manufactures a wide range of automotive products related to electrical power, as well as windshield wipers, mirrors, and power seats.
