By the Numbers: Christmas Shopping Trends

This holiday season, millions of Americans in manufacturing, supply chain, distribution, and logistics roles are working hard to ensure that all things Christmas run smoothly and efficiently. Here’s how the holiday plays out by the numbers:

  • In 2023, holiday retail sales are expected to reach around $960 billion, up from 2022.
  • 93% of people plan to buy at least "some” gifts online this year.
  • More specifically, 41% will buy "most” or "all” gifts online.
  • 33% of shoppers will use social media to shop.
  • 45% of U.S. consumers started shopping for holiday gifts in October.
  • More than 50% of consumers plan to pay for same-day delivery this holiday season.
  • In terms of sustainable practices, 71% of Christmas shoppers prefer retailers who prioritize sustainability.
  • 1 in 10 people return their gifts to the store.

As people hustle and bustle to prepare for the holiday season, few realize how much it takes to ensure that everything — from the tinsel to the gifts — is ready in time. While Santa and his elves may get all the credit, the true credit goes to the vast network of industry professionals working behind the scenes to make the magic happen.
