ZTE Designs Virtex-6 FPGAs Into IP Transport Network Platform, Enabling 100G Ethernet Service Deployment

ZTE cites superior FPGA performance, low power consumption & flexibility as key contributors to fast time-to-market & competitive edge in carrier, enterprise and data center network solutions

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced that ZTE Corp., a publicly listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, designed its packet-based multiservice bearer platform using high performance Xilinx Virtex®-6 FPGAs, enabling 100G Ethernet service deployment.

ZTE cites superior Virtex-6 FPGA performance, low power consumption and flexibility as key contributors to its success in getting to market in record time to establish a technology lead in the fiercely competitive market for carrier, enterprise and data center network solutions. Notably, ZTE's IPTN (internet protocol transport network) passed the most strict, authoritative tests for communications infrastructure solutions, most recently in China Mobile's large-scale testing which support high-volume purchasing.

"As cloud computing, mobile Internet and high-definition services drive global demand for steep increases in data bandwidth, ZTE is commanding a market and technology edge over our rivals in next-generation, ultra-high-speed routing," said Zhai HongJian, director of the IPTN hardware department at ZTE Corp. "Like ZTE, Xilinx has a proven track record of technology innovation. Virtex-6 met the stringent performance and power specification for our IPTN design, while delivering a level of flexibility that will enable our customers to quickly and easily address evolving standards and deploy new services. Looking ahead, our design teams are excited about the tremendous potential for ZTE as an early adopter of Xilinx 28nm 7 series FPGAs."

Xilinx's Virtex-6 FPGA met all performance and industry standard specifications [40G MAC, Ethernet OAM (operations, administration and maintenance) and BFD (bidirectional forwarding detection)] to enable key IPTN functionality, including: massive packet switching, flexible traffic management with sufficient queue resource and traffic cache capacity, programmability and upgradeability. In addition, the Virtex-6 FPGA met ZTE's low power requirements to easily pass thermal design tests, thereby ensuring system stability.

Over the past 10 years, ZTE has also selected Xilinx Virtex and Spartan® FPGAs for wireless baseband, RRU (spell out) platforms, data communications systems and carrier network, and switch and access network products, to name a few. Earlier this year, Xilinx was named ZTE 2010 Best Global Supplier in recognition of the company as a preferred supplier and technology innovator for demonstrating excellence in cost, quality, support and delivery.

Xilinx Virtex FPGAs: Supporting Next Wave of High-bandwidth Systems

The Virtex-6 and Virtex-7 FPGA families are ideally suited to wired communications equipment requirements for scalable bandwidth and optical-compliant high-speed serial transceivers with low jitter for high volume end products such as: routers, switches, 100GE line cards, 100-gigabit optical transport network (OTN) muxponders for integrated multiplexer/transponder applications, 300G Interlaken bridges, and 400G optical network cards.

Virtex FPGAs also address a range of other high-bandwidth applications, including: highest signal processing for advanced wireless baseband processing systems, ultra-high digital signal performance for aerospace and defense infrastructure systems, and scalable, flexible, low-latency performance for broadcast systems.

About Xilinx 6 series FPGAs

Since their introduction in February 2009, Xilinx's award-winning 6 series FPGAs, Spartan-6 and Virtex-6, have been widely adopted by customers worldwide in a broad range of applications and key end markets including: aerospace and defense, automotive, consumer, industrial, medical, scientific and wired/wireless communications. To date, Xilinx has sold more than 10,000 Targeted Design Platforms for the 6 series. More than 30 6 series Targeted Design Platforms and 70 FMC daughter cards are available in production today from Xilinx and members of its global ecosystem (Distribution Channel and Alliance Program).

The Virtex-6 FPGA family is the high-performance silicon foundation for Xilinx Targeted Design Platforms, built with the right mix of programmability, integrated blocks for digital signal processing, memory, and connectivity support - including high-speed transceiver capabilities - to satisfy the insatiable demand for higher bandwidth and higher performance. Spartan-6 FPGAs are designed for cost-sensitive applications requiring high-speed connectivity and low-power operation with serial transceivers, advanced power management, and proven 45-nanometer architecture.
