Xilinx at Embedded World 2008

What: Embedded World 2008

Where: Nuremberg, Germany, Exhibition Centre - Stand #12-515

When: February 26 - 28

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 20 -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced its participation at Embedded World 2008 in Nuremberg, Germany from February 26 through 28. The company will deliver conference papers and conduct live demonstrations of new embedded processing solutions.

Conference Papers
Accelerating System Performance with FPGA-centric Hybrid Multi-Processing
Glenn Steiner, Senior Manager, Xilinx Advanced Products Division
Feb. 26, 16.00 - 16.30

An in-depth discussion of multi-processing methodologies, spanning industry-standard and FPGA-based embedded processing architectures, including:

o Comparison of programming models, such as tightly-coupled algorithmic accelerators functioning as co-processing engines.

o Discussion of system architectural trade-offs in terms of design flexibility, throughput and overall performance.

o Hybrid multi-processing design example using hardware accelerated dual
processors for a streaming video application.

C-Language Techniques for FPGA Acceleration of Embedded Software
Glenn Steiner, Senior Manager, Xilinx Advanced Products Division
Feb. 26, 10.00 - 11.00

Recent advances in FPGA technology have made hardware-accelerated computing a reality for many application domains, including image processing, digital signal processing, data security and communications. Until recently, such platforms required in-depth hardware design expertise. Now, software-to- hardware tools allow application developers to describe and generate complete software/hardware systems using higher-level languages. In this session, attendees will learn specific techniques for creating FPGA-accelerated applications using C-language, including:

o How to perform software/hardware partitioning within the FPGA platform,
using sample applications.

o Tradeoffs between data communication methods, such as streaming and
shared memory.

o C-language coding styles, with an emphasis on reducing cycle delays and
hardware resource optimization, while increasing effective throughput
rates.

o Real-world examples, such as an accelerated image processing
application that demonstrates the practicality of using C-language
for FPGA-based application acceleration.

Extending DSP Design to Heterogeneous Hardware Platforms
Daniele Bagni, Field Applications Engineer, DSP Specialist, Xilinx Europe
Feb. 26, 14.00 - 15.00

An overview of heterogeneous platform-based design flows that allow DSP designers with little or no FPGA design experience to evaluate and exploit the performance and power benefits of adding an FPGA co-processor to their system.

Xilinx Stand Demonstrations # 12-515 - Embedded Processing in FPGAs

Xilinx will demonstrate next-generation embedded processing solutions that deliver enhanced system-level performance, design flexibility and increased productivity for a broad range of applications.

MicroBlaze v7 Soft Processor

Version 7 of the award-winning MicroBlaze(TM) processor builds upon previous versions while maintaining instruction set backward compatibility. With the new MMU, designers can use commercial-grade embedded operating systems when implementing their designs in both the Spartan(TM) family of low- cost FPGAs for high-volume applications, as well as Virtex(TM) family of high- performance FPGAs.

Comprehensive Embedded Development Tools

Xilinx's award winning Platform Studio provides a common, fully integrated hardware/software development environment that supports the complete range of Xilinx possessing solutions. Platform Studio is included in EDK and enables designers to easily develop, integrate and debug their entire embedded system. The EDK is a complete embedded development solution that includes the Platform Studio tool suite, MicroBlaze processor, a library of peripheral IP cores, an integrated software development environment based on the Eclipse framework, GNU compiler, debugger and other tools for a wide range of applications.

Industrial Networking IP

An industrial networking board based on Xilinx® Spartan(TM)-3 FPGAs provides a full-featured, low-cost programmable platform for real-time industrial Ethernet supporting CAN, EtherCAT, SERCOS III, and Ethernet POWERLINK real-time Ethernet protocol standards. The board offers a standard platform to address diverse and evolving standards for industrial automation, while meeting stringent size, power and performance requirements.

Machine Vision Intellectual Property (IP)

The industry's first FPGA-based GigE Vision IP core solution using Xilinx Spartan-3 devices. This single-chip GigE Vision solution addresses a significant challenge that Machine Vision and high-performance camera manufacturers face to offer cost-effective, high-speed, industry-standard compliant GigE Vision transport.

Using the GigE Vision standard allows real time transfer of uncompressed images and data, ideal for high-performance cameras. The soft-core tri-mode Ethernet MAC is optimized for Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGAs, keeping costs down by removing dependence on high-priced chips with built-in hardened Ethernet MACs. The VisualApplets software enables quick and easy implementation of a Machine Vision system using fully parameterizable image processing operators.

The solution was developed by Xilinx in collaboration with the company's Alliance Program members Feith Sensor to Image GmbH, Finger Lakes Engineering, and SILICONSOFTWARE GmbH.
