Bayer MaterialScience Highlights Use of New Aliphatic Polyurethane Coatings for Corrosion Protection of Structural Steel

Pittsburgh, February 21, 2008 - Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) LLC's broad portfolio of coatings technologies has been successfully protecting metal substrates from harsh environments - both indoor and outdoor - for decades. In a presentation made at the recent 2008 Paint and Coatings Expo in Los Angeles, a BMS scientist presented a case study that illustrated the advantages of utilizing new aliphatic polyurethane coatings to protect structural steel from corrosion.

In-Situ Performance of Galvanized and Zinc Rich Coating Systems for Structural Steel in a Chemical Plant Environment was presented by Chak Wong, Bayer Technology Services. The presentation was also authored by Carl Angeloff, P.E., head - NAFTA Business Development and Manager - BD Corrosion, BMS, and Kurt Best, senior scientist, BMS.

In his presentation, Wong compared the use of weathering steels, hot dip galvanizing and coating systems (epoxies, traditional urethanes and new fast-cured aliphatic urethanes) to protect structural steel from corrosion in a chemical plant. In particular, he will highlight the benefits a new aliphatic polyurethane coating system offers. These benefits include very fast cure, good adhesion, good gloss, good color retention and cost effectiveness.

"Polyurethane coatings incorporating raw materials from BMS have a long, successful track record standing up to harsh environments," said Wong. "This case study will offer PACE attendees a real-world example of the benefits of utilizing polyurethane coatings incorporating Bayer technologies."
