WorldViz 3D Simulation Technology Used by Virtual Reality Pioneering Book Authors

Press release date: Apr 21, 2011

Authors of new "Infinite Reality" book from Stanford University and UC Santa Barbara use WorldViz solutions for their research on future of digital technology

Santa Barbara, CA - WorldViz, the industry leader in interactive virtual reality solutions, has equipped two pioneering virtual reality labs with technology providing the research basis for a newly released book titled Infinite Reality, published by Harper Collins. Authors and Professors Jim Blascovich (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Jeremy Bailenson (Stanford University), both leading experts in the field of virtual reality, have been using WorldViz 3D simulation technology for over a decade, immersing human subjects in computer generated virtual environments. Infinite Reality, the first book to detail how Virtual Reality will change our future, reveals how the human brain behaves in virtual environments and examines where radical new developments, including WorldViz VR technology, will lead us in five, fifty, and five hundred years.

"We are excited about providing two eminent minds with technology empowering them to conduct groundbreaking research on subjects such as digital human representation. Imagine how important it will be for us to understand our digital identity as more and more aspects of our social lives shift into computer generated environments," said Peter Schlueer, President of WorldViz. "The installation of WorldViz technology at Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab impressively demonstrates how virtual reality can foster innovative research, attract bright students, and give researchers an edge when it comes to winning grants."

The WorldViz system allows users to literally walk through virtual environments in full-scale and experience a stunning sense of immersion. A stereoscopic head-mounted display (HMD) provides the high-fidelity 3D visuals, and an automatic motion tracking system synchronizes movement in the real world with movement in the virtual world, creating a Holodeck illusion. You can even naturally interact with virtual objects using a data glove, Nintendo Wii or Microsoft Kinect.
