Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Electrical Power Systems to Front End Loaders

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Electrical Power Systems

Driven by deregulation of the utility industry over the past decade, demand for commercial, industrial, utility, and generation commissioning of electrical power systems has been on the rise. To provide the industry a tool for commissioning electrical systems that encompasses the electrical industry as a whole and keeps pace with an emerging market not previously addressed by any other standards a new American National Standard (ANS) has been published by the InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer.

ANSI/NETA ECS2015, Standard for Electrical Commissioning of Electrical Power Equipment and Systems, describes the systematic process of documenting, and placing into service newly installed, or retrofitted electrical power equipment and systems. The ANS covers specifications to assure that tested electrical systems are safe, reliable, and operational; are in conformance with applicable standards and manufacturers tolerances; and, are installed in accordance with design specifications. It also specifies the correct operation of all interlock safety devices for fail-safe functions as well as the correct operation of all sensing devices, alarms, and indicating devices. It is intended that ANSI/NETA ECS2015 be used in conjunction with ANSI/NETA ATS2013, Standard for Acceptance Testing Specifications for Electrical Power Equipment and Systems.

NETA is a non-profit organization that serves the electrical testing industry by establishing standards, publishing specifications, accrediting independent, thirdparty testing companies, certifying test technicians, and promoting the professional services of its members. NETA works to advance industry standards for power system installation and maintenance to ensure the highest level of reliability and safety, and disseminates information to educate the public and end user about the merits of electrical acceptance and maintenance testing.

Front End Loaders

Tractors are the most common piece of equipment found on any farm as they provide the muscle power needed for modern agricultural enterprises. They are often equipped with front end loaders, a front-mounted square wide bucket used to scoop up dirt, snow, feed, gravel, logs, sand, or other loose material and move it from one place to another without pushing the material across the ground. Unfortunately, every year, front end loaded tractor accidents cause property damage, reduced productivity, increased operating costs, personal injuries, and even death.

In an effort to provide a reasonable degree of personal safety for operators and other persons during normal operation and servicing of front end loaders on agricultural tractors, a new ANS has been released by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer. ASAE S583.1 AUG2015, Safety for Agricultural Front End Loaders, specifies safety requirements for the design and construction of agricultural front end loaders designed to be mounted on agricultural wheeled tractors as defined in ANSI/ASAE 390.5, Definitions and Classifications of Agricultural Field Equipment.

ASABE is an educational and scientific membership organization of agricultural, food, and biological engineers seeking to develop efficient and environmentally sensitive methods of producing food, fiber, timber, and renewable energy sources.
