Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Focimeters to Balers
In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Focimeters
According to the Vision Council, an ANSI organizational member, nearly 75% of adults suffer from poor eyesight and wear glasses or contact lenses as a corrective aid. Prescriptions for these glasses and contact lenses are filled with the use of a focimeter. Capable of marking the lens center and various other measurements critical to proper performance of the lens, a focimeter determines the prism, sphere, cylinder, and axis of a lens, and measures its diopters, or refractive light-bending power.
A recently revised American National Standard, ANSI Z80.17-2008, Focimeters, sets tolerances and specifies test devices to verify those tolerances for the primary instrument used to measure the optical power of lenses. By offering guidance on the accuracy of focimeters, the standard in turn provides assurance that visual corrective aids such as glasses and contact lenses can demonstrably meet the requirements set for them by their respective ANSI-Accredited Standards Committee Z80 (ASC Z80) standards.
ASC Z80 guides the quality and safety of eye care through standardization efforts that address equipment used by eye care professionals, as well as prescription and non-prescription ophthalmic products. The Vision Council serves as secretariat (administrative organization) for ASC Z80.

Balers
Baling equipment is used on farms around the world to compress cut and raked crops such as hay or straw into bales, and to bind these bales with twine. Balers are also used in material recycling facilities, primarily for consolidating plastic, paper, or cardboard for transport.
In order to assure the safety of workers who deal with balers, the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA) recently published ANSI Z245.5-2008, Baling Equipment -- Safety Requirements for Installation, Maintenance, and Operation. This American National Standard applies to baling equipment rated at 600 volts or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and is employed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.
EIA is an ANSI organizational member that, through its two sub-associations the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) and the Waste Equipment Technology Association (WASTEC), represents companies and individuals who manage solid and medical wastes; manufacture and distribute waste equipment; and provide environmental management, consulting and pollution-prevention-related services.
