Universal's AdVantis and Polaris Platforms Deliver Unique Solution for Endicott Interconnect Technologies

Universal Instruments Corporation today announced that Endicott Interconnect Technologies (EI) has selected its AdVantis(TM) and Polaris(TM) platforms for automated production of a sophisticated military product application.

Known for its leadership in high-complexity, medium-volume manufacturing, Endicott Interconnect is an Endicott, New York based specialty electronics firm that delivers chip packaging, printed circuit board and electronic manufacturing services to its global customers. Providing technical expertise and production capabilities for very large, complex printed circuit boards and unique product applications, EI is highly sought after to provide solutions to customers with very sophisticated product requirements.

In order to fully automate the production of a high performance chip carrier for a leading military supplier, Endicott Interconnect has partnered with Universal Instruments. With several hundred surface-mount components, several memory devices and a very large heat spreader, the product requires a production solution that can accommodate the varied and complex component placement. Universal Instruments' AdVantis(TM) Flip Chip placement system and its Polaris Multi-process Assembly machine have been selected and are currently operational in support of EI's customized application. The full integration of the equipment and component traceability software was facilitated by Universal's Systems Division.

"In addition to our stringent accuracy requirements as well as the ability to gang pick and place the larger components, we also require sophisticated parts tracking capabilities due to the mission-critical nature of the product," says Raj Rai, Senior Engineering Manager at EI. "Through the AdVantis and Polaris systems as well as Universal's Dimensions Line-Level parts tracking software, Universal is providing an advanced and extremely innovative solution for our unique manufacturing needs. We believe Universal's equipment is superior."

Universal Instruments' AdVantis AFC-42 platform is specifically designed to deliver high-end performance and robust operation extremely cost-effectively. The high-accuracy capabilities of the AdVantis AFC-42 can also be configured with dispense and underfill options for even greater flexibility and resource utilization. For odd-form and final assembly solutions, Universal has long been recognized as the world leader. The company's Polaris Multi-process assembly platform delivers an automated solution to costly and time-consuming manual assembly and effectively bridges the gap between robotics and standard PCB assembly equipment.

"We view Universal as a strategic partner and will continue to work closely with them as we chart our technology roadmaps for the future and encounter new and challenging product applications," says Rai. "When it comes to process expertise, placement accuracy, reliability and changeover capability, Universal continues to exceed our expectations."
