Ultraflex Using Induction Heater to Debraze and Recover Carbide Tips

[Dec 18th, 2018] Easy removal of carbide tips on steel parts using an induction heater has been the subject of the most recent demonstration by UltraFlex Power Technologies. The well-known provider of digitally controlled and innovative induction heaters revealed the results of yet another successful application of induction heating for manufacturing purposes, set up per customer request.

In the test application, various sized steel work pieces needed to have their carbide tips debrazed and then recovered, using target temperature of 1500ºF (815ºC). A 5 KW induction heater from UltraFlex proprietary UltraHeat SM series had been used for the test. UltraHeat SM heaters are compact and operate with either a water-cooled or air-cooled remote heat station. They feature adaptive digital phase control providing efficient operation in a wide frequency range.

To achieve the target temperature, the heater was set to supply power of 4.7 kW. The debrazing and recovery of the carbide tips was completed within 90 seconds for the smaller test part. The second steel test part, being a saw piece, had the carbides on its edges fully recovered within 120 seconds.

This test setup by UltraFlex showed that carbide tips recovery could be successfully completed for different sized steel parts, only by tuning the induction coil used. The process was energy and time-efficient - induction systems usually allow the heating time to be reduced by 50%, increasing the efficiency to 90%. Since no open flame was required, induction heating also meant eliminating smoke, waste heat, and noxious emissions.
