UltraFlex Soldering Two 45° Brass corner Joints within 20 Seconds Using Induction Heating

December 12th, 2017 - UltraFlex Power Technologies has recently addressed a customer request to demonstrate how their Induction Heating systems can be used to solder two 45° brass corner joints. The demonstration showed that the two corner joints could be successfully soldered within 20 seconds, leaving the surface on either side of the joints clean and nice.

For the demonstration, UltraFlex used StayBrite #8 Silver Solder and Bridgit solder flux, both supplied by customer. The induction heating was done using UltraFlex High Power Induction Systems from the UltraHeat L Series and a custom pancake coil, designed to optimize the heating process for this specific application.

To prepare the joints for the heating process, flux was first applied at all of them. The assembly was then positioned into for heating, with the temperature required for the soldering being as high as 550°F (288°C). At a frequency of 37 kHz, UltraFlex Induction Heating system achieved the target temperature within 20 seconds. Then, the brazing rod was applied.

After the soldering process, the visible surface of the joint remained nice and clean. This was achieved by placing the visible side of the joint on a flat wooden surface, so the brazing alloy would not leak and spill while the seam was internally brazed.

Because the brazing alloy was manually fed, the coil had to be placed under the joint, facing the visible side of the frame. If solder paste was used, the coil could be placed on top of the joint. With a special dual coil, both joints (top and bottom) could be brazed at the same time.

This quick and easy joint soldering did not require frame flipping or special cleaning, the samples in the demonstration were paper towel cleaned only.

In the demo the engineers used an UltraFlex High Power Induction Heating system, with output power of 75-200kW. Based on the power requirements, though, the soldering could also be done using an UltraFlex 5-15 kW Induction Heating system.

About UltraFlex Power Technologies:

Ultraflex Power Technologies (ultraflexpower.com) manufactures and sells induction heating power supplies. Induction power supplies generate a precise, targeted electromagnetic field that induces heat in conductive materials without the need for a flame or any contact with the material.

An induction heating system consists of an induction power supply and a custom-designed inductor (also known as a coil). The induction power supplies are universal systems, with custom coils designed to optimize the heating process for the specific application. These systems can be used for heating conductive materials in variety of applications ranging from metal melting and heat-treating to medical and nanoparticle research.
