U.S. Postal Service Awards Nilfisk-Advance America New Vacuum Systems Contract

Nilfisk-Advance America Supplies Cleaning System to USPS Mail Sorting Facilities

MALVERN, Pa., Nov. 15, 2005 - The United States Postal Service processes up to half a billion pieces of mail every day of the year, using mail-processing equipment that is required to read and sort up to 36,000 pieces of mail per hour. Clearly, equipment used to maintain these sorters must be able to keep up with that high level of performance each and every shift of each and every day.

Nilfisk-Advance America, a leading manufacturer of industrial vacuum cleaners, and The United States Postal Service have finalized an agreement that will see new vacuum producers and filters deployed across over 480 sorting facilities nationwide. The contract, relating to the cleaning of mail-processing equipment such as Delivery Bar Code Sorter and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) based machines, was awarded after a bid process.

At the USPS, the use of compressed or blown air for cleaning mail-processing equipment is prohibited, and so when cleaning is required, the accepted cleaning methods are HEPA filtered vacuums, and damp and/or lint free cloths. As previously employed vacuum systems had proved insufficient to meet the changing needs of the postal service, a long term solution was needed. This led to the USPS announcing a competitive process to provide the vacuum producers and filters for its mail sorting needs. Nilfisk-Advance America's bid included the provision of the Nilfisk 3508WPS vacuum - a special edition of the successful 3508W model that is tailored to the needs of the United States Postal Service.

The 3508WPS delivers powerful low-maintenance performance with a low noise output. The vacuum producer includes a HEPA filter that traps up to 99.97 % of dust and debris down to .03 microns, an oversized collection container with a capacity of 26 gallons, and the reliability necessary to sustain operation over long periods of use.

Roll out of the 3508WPS is slated to begin in 2006.
