Two International Awards Won By TricorBraun

St. Louis, 12/20/11...TricorBraun, one of the world's largest suppliers of jars, bottles and other rigid packaging components, won two, international awards in the WorldStar packaging competition. WorldStar awards are presented only for packages that have already won in a national competition.

TricorBraun Design and Engineering created 16-ounce and 32-ounce, squeeze-and- measure bottles for Sevin Concentrate Bug Killer, a home and garden insecticide. Its second award was for a custom-designed fruit drink bottle for a Westin Foods division.

In order for Sevin to command shelf presence in high-traffic lawn and garden departments, the bright red bottles were designed with multiple, sloping side-panels that display pressure sensitive, foil labels printed in corresponding shapes.

The bottles were designed to avoid product contact with the consumer. Using proven technology, TricorBraun Design was able to create a custom bottle that focused on the placement of a divider plug into a measuring chamber to assure the proper amount of pesticide remains safely in place until it is poured into a sprayer.

A view stripe allows the consumer to see the remaining quantity of concentrate in the container and the measuring space.

The designers were also challenged to assure the uniquely-shaped bottles could be accommodated by high-speed filling lines. The neck finish was changed to 28-400 mm and a 28-mm child-resistant, polypropylene closure was used on the redesigned bottle.

For Mae's Health and Wellness Superberries, a Westin Foods division, a custom-designed bottle was created that reduced packaging cost and positioned the product as a health-oriented, antioxidant fruit drink.

The reduced cost was achieved by decreasing the bottle's weight 13 percent, to 36 grams from 41 grams. The lighter weight decreased distribution costs.

The filling expense was trimmed by replacing traditional labels with decoration screened directly to the bottle-a strategy that eliminated the need to discard bottles whose labels had become stained by the aroniaberry (chokeberry) juice. Now, bottles that have been splashed by the purple juice can be wiped and sold.

The new TricorBraun design features an embossed logo that enhances brand visibility, and the top of the bottle is rounded, resembling the shape of an aroniaberry. Its slender profile presents an elegant appearance and its practical shape allows the consumer to "one- hand" both the bottle and its new 38 mil, polypropylene flip top closure. The container employs a 38-400 neck finish
