Results Corroborate That the 400MHz TX4939 Delivers Better Performance at Lower Clock Rates Than Similar-Class Processors for Digital-Consumer Applications With Networking
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 22 // -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced that certified benchmark scores from the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC®) are now available for its TX4939XBG-400 microprocessor, the latest member of the Toshiba TX49 MIPS® RISC microprocessor family. The device was tested against the EEMBC Networking Version 1.1 and Version 2.0 benchmark suites and the results substantiate the processor's high-performance system architecture and benefits for digital-consumer applications that include networking. Using the EEMBC Networking Version 1.1 silicon benchmark, the TX4939 with a Netmark(TM) score of 7.1 currently ranks as the best-in-class processor when compared to similar processors with up to 532 megahertz (MHz) performance. Using the EEMBC Networking Version 2.0 silicon benchmark, the TX4939 achieved a TCPmark(TM) of 83.1 and an IPmark(TM) of 58.6, 20 percent higher at present than the nearest published EEMBC values for a comparable device.

About the TX4939
The TX4939XBG-400 microprocessor incorporates a 64-bit MIPS RISC CPU with 32-bit MAC (multiply/accumulate) support. It also includes an IEEE754-compliant single/double precision FPU. The TX4939 supports the MIPS I, II and III instruction-set architecture and is fully code-compatible with other microprocessors in the TX49 family. The TX4939 CPU core incorporates 32KB each of 4-way set-associative instruction and data caches. The processor operates at 400MHz and typically dissipates 1 watt of power.
The TX4939 has multiple on-chip peripheral functions, including an 8/16-bit local bus controller, a highly optimized security engine that supports DES/3DES/AES/MD5/SHA1 algorithms, serial/parallel video ports that support ITU-R 656 video format, ATA controllers, a DDR SDRAM controller, a NAND flash controller, Ethernet MAC controllers (RMII), a PCI controller, a DMA controller, an interrupt controller, an AC-link controller, serial and parallel ports, timers/counters and a real-time clock (RTC) with battery back-up support. The TX4939 requires a 1.25V power supply for the core, 2.5V for the DDR interface and 3.3V for I/O. The chip is housed in a 456-pin PBGA package with 1mm ball pitch. Thirty-six pins are used as thermal balls for heat dissipation. The development environment for the TX4939 consists of an evaluation board with PCI, ISA, audio and video connectors for easy third-party board add-ons. This evaluation board supports complete real-time OS and software-development tool chains.
