Ticona Paper Receives ANTEC Outstanding Paper Award from Color & Appearance Division of SPE

Florence, Ky., Kelsterbach, Germany, Shanghai, PR China, Dec. 16, 2010 - A Ticona paper, "Get Green Without Paint," received the 2010 ANTEC Outstanding Paper Award from the Color & Appearance Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE).

Bruce M. Mulholland, color technology manager for Ticona, delivered the "Get Green Without Paint: Looking Good, and Doing Good, With Molded-in-Metallic Engineering Resins" during the CAD sessions at ANTEC 2010 in May in Orlando. His paper provides an in-depth look at new engineering resins that have been developed to eliminate the need for painting and can achieve the desired appearance right out of the mold. This article explores these resins as a way to "get green," both environmentally and with lower cost.

Ticona has developed patented MetaLX(TM) technology that produces metal-effect polymers. Named MetaLX, the line of appearance-focused engineering thermoplastics from Ticona can reduce costs, eliminate chemical pollutants associated with painting and, at the same time, achieve the aesthetics of a metallic look.

MetaLX metal-effect polymers:

o Offer excellent mechanical performance

o Retain color after UV light and thermal exposure

o Deliver beautiful surface appearance and textures (replicates mold surface)

o Provide resistance to stains, scratches, wear (durability) and most chemicals and cleaners

o Match, or complement, mating metal parts

o Stay non-thermally conductive and fingerprint resistant unlike metal

Mulholland, who has worked in plastics industry since he graduated in 1980 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., was a color & compounding laboratory supervisor for the plastics division of Arco Chemical in Newtown Square, Penn. He joined Celanese Corporation as a color technology manager in 1986. He is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers, and Honored Service Member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Mulholland is a past recipient of SPE ANTEC Paper Awards (CAD Sessions):

o 2008 - "Advances in Weathering Resistance of COPE"

o 2007 - "Effect of Additives on the Color and Appearance of Plastics"

o 2001 - "Do You Want Some Salsa With Those Chips? "

o 1998 - "Colored Engineering Resins for High Strain/Thin Walled Applications"

o 1997 - "Introduction to Color Theory"

o 1996 - "Color Concerns in Polymers and Blends"

o 1995 - "Verification of Color Difference Equations"

o 1994 - "Cadmium Free Colored Engineering Plastics for the Automotive Industry"

o 1993 - "What's Wrong With That Number? "
