Thermo Electron Acquires Omega Data Systems and Further Strengthens its Market-leading Elemental Analysis Offering

Waltham, MA (June 27, 2006) - Thermo Electron Corporation, the world leader in analytical instruments, recently announced it has acquired Netherlands-based Omega Data Systems, developer of the world renowned UniQuant® XRF analysis package. This latest acquisition further strengthens Thermo's market-leading elemental analysis offering and continues the company's commitment to set industry standards for cleaner, safer and more cost-effective analysis across the environmental, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, food and beverage, petrochemical, metal and geological markets.

"The Omega Data Systems acquisition caps an exciting period for our global team of elemental analysis professionals," said Dan Shine, vice president of Thermo's elemental analysis product lines. "Coupled with our other recent acquisition of NITON Portable X-Ray Analyzers and innovations across our existing products, we believe we are setting new benchmarks for analysis. We now have the broadest range of solutions available for our customers, from the laboratory bench to portable units in the field."

Thermo's significant elemental analysis milestones over the past year include:

Acquisition of Omega Data Systems - Integrated with Thermo's core laboratory X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) instruments, the UniQuant technology enables customers to analyze samples of any kind without needing to calibrate instruments with a matching standard. By removing the need for multiple matrix calibrations and associated requirements for sample preparation, Thermo's XRF instruments in conjunction with UniQuant package will reduce dangers to the environment as well as laboratory costs associated with reference materials, sample handling and disposal.

Acquisition of NITON, LLC - The addition of the NITON Portable XRF Analyzers enables Thermo to lead the industry in bringing traditional laboratory-based analytical techniques to settings outside the laboratory. The NITON analyzer is the industry's first hand-held X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, giving Thermo customers the most powerful and accurate solution for comprehensive alloy sorting. This is especially important for recycling facilities and for non-destructive testing in industrial alloy inspection, including the rigorous demands of aerospace "superalloys."

Introduction of Thermo's iCAP 6000 Series - The iCAP 6300 and iCAP 6500 are the most sensitive and high performing ICP emission spectrometers available. These novel instruments are specifically suited to the needs of general and elemental analysis laboratories in the environmental, petrochemical, metal, food and beverage, geo-chemical and cement industries. The iCAP spectrometer dramatic enhancement across a broad range of usability: ease of operation, reduced operating costs, excellent performance, high stability and even more bench space in the lab.

New Si and Mi Atomic Absorption (AA) spectrometers - Thermo extended its AA Series portfolio with the launch of new Si and Mi Atomic Absorption (AA) spectrometers which incorporate unique intelligent Spectrometer Qualification (iSQ). The iSQ enables the system to automatically test and confirm the spectrometer's hardware performance prior to any analytical run. These innovative instruments are mission-critical for high-throughput elemental analysis laboratories in the environmental, food and beverage, petrochemical and metallurgy industries where rerunning samples as a result of potential instrument problems can be time-consuming and costly.

New Wavelength Dispersive XRF instrument series - The ARL ADVANT'X series with IntelliPower(TM) technology is now the most powerful and flexible XRF available, with output up to 4200 watts for ultimate sensitivity. The new ARL ADVANT'X series has been designed to meet the highly demanding requirements of industrial and investigative XRF applications, including petrochemicals, environmental, geology, precious metals, oxides, ceramics, food and chemicals.

New EGM II gas introduction module - The EGM II is designed for the safe and reproducible introduction of gas and liquefied gas samples into a combustion analyzer, offering enhanced accuracy of total chlorine, total sulfur and total nitrogen analyses. The module delivers fast, precise and reliable results for QC laboratories in petrochemical and chemical refineries.
