TE Connectivity to Showcase High-Speed, Energy Efficient Fiber Connectivity at ECOC 2014

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, today announced that it will showcase its latest optical solutions and innovations at ECOC 2014 from September 22-24 in Cannes, France. The company will exhibit its new Coolbit optical engine -- the driving technology behind TE's soon-to-be-released 100G, 300G and 400G active fiber optics portfolio.

"In today's world, instant access to data can be the difference between success and failure," said Nathan Tracy, technologist and head of data communications standards at TE. "The constant influx of new communications technologies on the market is taking a toll on data networks, with greater network congestion and increased data center energy consumption. Next-generation solutions are needed that address higher data rates, decrease power consumption and support new, more efficient equipment architectures while also seamlessly integrating into the consumer's day-to-day experience. In a series of demos and displays at ECOC, we will demonstrate how TE's fiber optics solutions can have a major impact on these evolving market demands."

A full list of TE's ECOC demonstrations and displays include:

• 100G, 300G and 400G Active Fiber Optic Products (featuring 25G Coolbit optical engine): Boasting extremely low power consumption, with QSFP28 modules performing at less than 1.5 watts per transceiver, this new line of active optics is poised to help communication systems achieve up to 60 percent more power savings than existing solutions. At the component level alone, this low power consumption can translate into significant system savings. Additionally, for every watt of power saved at this level, equipment operators realize additional infrastructure savings in operating expenses.
The Coolbit product technology serves as the optical engine for four active optics products on display at ECOC including:
• 100G QSFP28 active optical cables (AOCs)
• 100G QSFP28 transceivers
• 300G mid-board optical (MBO) modules
• 400G CDFP AOCs

• MXC fiber optics: This new product line will support 64 fibers and accommodate up to 25 Gbps per channel, allowing for aggregate data transfers of 1.6 Tb/s. The MXC 64-fiber cable assemblies provide 33 percent more density and up to 10 times more dust/dirt immunity than traditional multi-fiber interconnects.

• 29 Tbps Line Card: This demo is an example of what occurs as optical modules move off the faceplate and onto line cards. The demo shows 48 MBO transceivers on a PCB; each MBO is 300 Gbps full duplex in a 1 rack unit (1RU) footprint, resulting in an aggregated optical transport capacity of 28.8 Tb/s. The MBOs are optically routed to the front panel via a complex multilayer optical shuffle consisting of 1,152 fibers. The fiber shuffle is protected by an onboard fiber management tray between the faceplate and the electrical circuit board. TE will participate in several live demos in the OIF booth (#525) including a CDFP 400G thermal demo, 100G copper cables demo, STRADA Whisper 100G backplane connector demo and QSFP28 100G IO demo.

TE's Jeroen Duis, manager of electro-optical engineering, will also present Data Center Interconnects, The Future of Optics: Coolbit Optical Engines on September 24 at 10:45 a.m. in the Salle Esterel room. Duis will discuss the concerns associated with data center energy consumption, the increased demand for data, and the importance of cooling at the component level.
