Student Winners Announced in NREL's alternative energy car races.

NREL's Junior Solar Sprint, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Lithium Ion Battery car competitions saw 104 participating teams from 23 Colorado schools. Student teams raced solar, lithium ion, or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles they designed and built themselves, and trophies were given out for speed as well as technology, craftsmanship, and innovation for each technology.

Student Winners Announced in Solar, Hydrogen and Lithium Ion Fuel Cell Car Races



One hundred four teams from 23 Colorado schools participated in today's car competitions hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

The student teams raced solar, lithium ion, or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles they designed and built themselves.

Trophies for the fastest lithium-ion powered model cars were given to Colorado students from Fitzsimons Middle School. Bailey, "Rage," first place; Woodlands Academy, Castle Rock, "Walter the Water Tanker,", second place; Bell Middle School, Golden, "The Lightning," third place.

Three lithium-ion design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Woodlands Academy, "Bobby the Bottle Rocket," first place; University Schools, Greeley, "Battery #1," second place; and The STEM Academy, Highlands Ranch, "Battery Systems Avenue," third place.

Trophies for the fastest solar powered model cars were given to Colorado students from Woodlands Academy, "Speedy Mercury," first place; Woodlands Academy, "Perry the Platypus," second place; and Estes Park Middle School, "Purple Terror," third place.

Three solar design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Lincoln Academy, Middle School, Arvada, first place; Lincoln Academy, LA Solar, second place; and Roxborough/Ranch View, Highlands Ranch, "Solar Zapper," third place.

Three trophies for the fastest hydrogen fuel cell powered model cars were given to teams from Drake Middle School, Arvada, Hydrogen II, first place; Estes Park Middle School, "Ricky the Recycling Bin," second place; and Estes Park Middle School, "Never Shout Never, Girls," third place.

Three hydrogen fuel cell design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Woodlands Academy, "Tommy the Tesla," first place; Lincoln Academy, "The Nerds," second place; and University Schools, "Meme," third place.
Students from The Manning School, Team #2, Golden, were awarded the Spirit Award for exhibiting good sportsmanship, including fairness and respectful behavior.

NREL's Junior Solar Sprint, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Lithium Ion Battery car competitions are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy's Golden Field Office, Jefferson County Public Schools, Dakota Ridge High School, Rocky Mountain Bottled Water, the Alliance for Sustainable Energy and NREL.
