STMicroelectronics Presents Its Latest Advances in Networked Multimedia

Geneva, November 1, 2005 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a world leader in creating platforms for embedded solutions, has published a new issue of the ST Journal of Research, which focuses on networked multimedia. Earlier issues, similarly built around a particular technology theme, have focused on Wireless Communications and Processor Architecture and Compilation. Written by STMicroelectronics' researchers, in cooperation with top-notch scientists and researchers at leading universities and research partners, the ST Journal of Research hosts technical papers and discussions on selected themes. All papers are peer-reviewed and coverage is coordinated by an expert in the relevant field.

The demand for networked consumer systems and devices is large and growing rapidly. At home, in a car or truck, at work, or at play, consumers want entertainment, information, and communication systems and devices to intercommunicate naturally and transparently. Connected multimedia terminals enable new and exciting applications but require existing laptops, palmtops, and cell phones to evolve into computing and information devices capable of supporting web-access, telephony, computation, data storage, and real-time media exchange using a variety of media formats over a variety of physical networks. This convergence involves all fields of computing and communications, wires and networks, middleware, applications, services, and has been fueled by more and more pervasive use of IP (Internet Protocol) in all facets of communication, media, entertainment, IT, and consumer-electronics industries.

The editors of the ST Journal of Research have collected twelve technical papers which address a wide spectrum of issues and solutions in networked multimedia. Covered in this issue are: An analysis of quality of services; Solutions to improve the quality and robustness of video streaming; Methodologies to increase audio/video quality using a cross-layer design approach; New adaptive end-to-end techniques; and other important topics.

"We are in the midst of an accelerating trend towards converged services capable of delivering ubiquitous, personalized services across multiple domains," said Andrea Cuomo, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and System Technology Officer of STMicroelectronics. "ST is a key player in the convergence domain, and the ST Journal of Research is an excellent vehicle from which to share the results of some key research activities."

The ST Journal of Research aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and exchange on key research issues, methodologies, and solutions. ST publishes its journal in electronic format and is available at st.com/stonline/press/magazine/stjournal/index.htm.
