Standard tests insulation paper used in planes and trains.

Press Release Summary:

ASTM International standard provides test method for high-performance paper used to insulate electrical parts of motors, transformers, ballasts, gaskets, and heat shields. Test described in new standard will be used for quality control during different stages of manufacturing to final product. Manufacturers of aramid paper and their customers will benefit from this new standard, to be published as D7812, Test Method for Tensile Testing of Aramid Paper.

New ASTM Standard Tests Insulation Paper Used in Planes, Trains

A new ASTM International standard provides a test method for high-performance paper used to insulate electrical parts of motors, transformers, ballasts, gaskets and heat shields. Manufacturers of aramid paper and their customers will benefit from this new tensile testing standard (soon to be published as D7812, Test Method for Tensile Testing of Aramid Paper).

According to ASTM member Michael McKeiver, associate investigator, DuPont Protection Technologies, the strength and stiffness of aramid paper is critical in the design, manufacture and end use of a variety of products, particularly in the aerospace and locomotive industries. The test described in the new standard will be used for quality control during the different stages of manufacturing to the final product.

ASTM member Aad Schaap, senior research and development scientist, Teijin Aramid B.V., notes that interested parties are welcome to join in the standards development work of ASTM Subcommittee D13.19 (Industrial Fibers and Metallic Reinforcements). The subcommittee has developed standards on fatigue, abrasion, adhesion and paper and is working on a proposed standard on determination of initial creep for optical fiber cables and areal density of armor panels.

To purchase standards, visit www.astm.org and search by the standard designation, or contact ASTM Customer Relations (tel +1.877.909.ASTM; sales@astm.org). ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
