SpecCoat, Providing Specialized Coating Services Since 1996, Offers Top Quality Coating, and Helping Companies "Re-Shore" Back to the U.S.A.

Fremont, Calif., – The story of Rick Ramirez and Kim Atkins of SpecCoat,SM formerly Specialized Coating Services (name change only) is literally a tale of two people starting in a garage 16 years ago and growing into a large and highly successful company offering conformal coating, encapsulating and ruggedization of electronic equipment.

Growing from two employees at the start to more than 160 today, SpecCoat,℠ services the defense, automotive, transportation, industrial, medical, aerospace,  and retail industries, offering reliable service and outstanding quality in its coating services.

Remarkably, the business has grown without any advertising or sales force at all; customers speak of SpecCoat℠ in glowing terms to friends in their industry, and a short while later the phone starts ringing at the 35,000 square foot headquarters in Fremont, Calif.

“We built the business on word of mouth, and the word of mouth was built on good quality and service to our customers,” said Ramirez, the company’s president.

But more than just operating a successful business, Rick Kim have branched out in the last few years to try to bring U.S. manufacturers back to the homeland.

This effort toward “re-shoring” businesses has helped return jobs to America, and shown companies of a certain size that building products abroad isn’t necessarily cheaper or better.

Ramirez knows that for huge behemoths like Intel or Apple, it wouldn’t be practical to re-shore. But for companies making smaller volumes, the “savings” in offshore manufacturing quickly disappears in additional technical support that is often required at the offshore facility, communication issues, increased transportation, delays, costs, etc.

“And the quality can’t be monitored when it’s thousands of miles away,” Ramirez said. “The margins aren’t that great when it comes to having to wait 30 days for your products to arrive (in the U.S.), and the communication across the time zones is also difficult.”

SpecCoat℠ serves as a facilitator for these U.S.-based businesses, and often encourages its current customers in the coating industry to bring jobs home.

A recent success story is Monkeylectric, a company that builds LED lights for bicycles. Monkeylectric, with the help of Specialized Coating, moved their manufacturing from overseas to the U.S. and has seen terrific results.

“Our efforts to bring businesses back has resulted in three companies within the last four years returning business back to the United States for either complete manufacturing of assemblies, or just the coating of their boards,” Ramirez said.
