BETHEL, CT, U.S.A.: The Thermoforming Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) has made a $20,000 matching grant to support SPE’s PlastiVan™ traveling plastics education program for elementary and high school students.

The SPE Foundation will draw from the amount to match funds provided by companies in the thermoforming industry to pay for PlastiVan visits to schools or company facilities hosting student programs. The Thermoforming Division expects the $20,000 contribution to be the first in an annual series of grants to support plastics education, according to James M. (Jay) Waddell, a Division official and managing partner of Plastic Concepts & Innovations, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

The PlastiVan program provides students throughout North America with concrete examples and hands-on activities to help them learn about polymer properties, processing, applications, benefits, and sustainability.

“The SPE Thermoforming Division considers the PlastiVan program a very important part of our mission to educate young people about plastics,” said Mr. Waddell. “Our board intends to make contributions to support the program a budget line item.”
