Solar Power Hot Topic at Massachusetts Sensor Manufacturer

September 9, 2008, Framingham MA-Nanmac Corporation, leading supplier of thermocouples to industry since 1956, held a ceremony last Friday, September 5, 2008, marking the turning on of their new solar array. Nanmac will generate enough power to supply 60% of energy needed for its US headquarters and manufacturing operations going forward.

On hand, were Governor Deval Patrick, State Senator Karen Spilka, Local Representative Pam Richardson, and State Secretary of Energy, Ian Bowles. After a tour, in which the Governor learned about the manufacturing process for Thermocouples, as well as met Nanmac employees, the Governor remarked that companies like Nanmac are "making it in Massachusetts."

Nanmac President Dan Nanigian presented a plaque to the Governor, thanking him for his support of Massachusetts manufacturing. He is referring to the many agencies and programs that Nanmac is involved with, including the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, The Massachusetts Export Center, The Massachusetts Office of Business Development, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center, and the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development, all of which had a representative at Friday's event.

Mr. Nanigian spoke about the last five years in the history of his 50 year old company, as the most difficult but most rewarding, as the company has risen above challenges in materials cost, labor costs, competition and energy costs, to grow more than 400% in exports, and employees.

Nanmac has long been a pioneer. It has worked with NASA for over 50 years, supplying temperature sensors for many manned missions into space, as well as industrial applications to over 5,000 degrees F. Solar panels on Nanmac's roof will help it reduce its energy bills, but it will also reduce greenhouse gases. The programs in place in Massachusetts have made the economics work-and it is hoped that more companies will see that the benefits of solar power far outweigh the costs.

Nanmac partners with many solar companies, including Evergreen Solar and GT Solar, both based in New England. For more information please go to http://nanmac.com/history.htm
