2013 Award Recipients Honored for Innovation and Excellence in Composites Manufacturing

Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Tech Group Announces Award Winners

DEARBORN, Mich., — Celebrating innovation and outstanding advances in the industry, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) awarded its 2013 Composites Manufacturing Awards at SME’s Composites Manufacturing Conference and Exhibits event held March 19-21 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, Calif.

In recognition of the significant contributions to the field of composites manufacturing, SME’s Composite Manufacturing Tech Group developed three technical awards to acknowledge the valuable roles manufacturers have within the industry.

The J.H. “Jud” Hall Composites Manufacturing Award is presented annually to an individual who has contributed to composites manufacturing or tooling technology through leadership, technical developments, patents or educational activities. This award celebrates innovation in solving issues related to production and applications development, and acknowledges significant contributions that reduce costs and waste streams, and improves quality and efficiency.

This year’s award recipient is Douglas A. McCarville, PhD, PE, a technical fellow in Boeing’s Research & Technology division. With 25 years of aircraft industry composites experience, McCarville, the holder of 23 composites-related patents, has developed a multitude of innovative methods and composite processing equipment for the production of advanced composites.

Also presented was the 2013 Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Awards. This is an international award that recognizes one large and one small company that have excelled in manufacturing products made from advanced composite materials, by either developing an innovative way via tooling and/or manufacturing process techniques or have shown accelerated growth by providing superior service, quality or cost reduction initiatives that have helped advance the composite manufacturing industry overall.

The 2013 recipients of this award are:

Northrop Grumman, Redondo Beach, Calif. – Northrop Grumman won the award in the large company division in recognition of its leading innovation for the incorporation of composite materials for parts and components on aerospace, ship, missiles and launch vehicles.

Janicki Industries, Sedro-Woolley, Wash. – Janicki Industries received the small company division award in recognition of its innovative developments with composite fabrication materials and techniques in high-precision tooling.

This year’s recipients were honored on March 20 at the Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Awards Ceremony during the co-located AeroDef and Composites Manufacturing event.
