Singapore Polymer Corporation Opens Suzhou Plant to Supply Chinese Processors with Full Range of Teknor Apex Compounds

SUZHOU, CHINA, May 2, 2007: Teknor Apex Company is now carrying out startup procedures for a plant in Suzhou, China that will produce compounds that comply with international standards for the appliance, automotive, building, electronics, medical device, wire and cable, and other markets, it was reported today by Singapore Polymer Corporation (SPC), a Teknor Apex Company. SPC will formally announce the opening of the plant at Chinaplas 2007 (Stand 2D115).

Operating the plant will be a new company, Teknor Apex (Suzhou) Advanced Polymer Compounds Co. Pte. Ltd.. The plant will have the capability to manufacture rigid and flexible vinyl and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) products like those developed in the U.S.A. by Teknor Apex and in Singapore by SPC; engineering thermoplastics (ETPs) produced in the UK and U.S.A. by Chem Polymer (also a Teknor Apex company); and other specialty compounds developed by SPC.

"Teknor Apex Suzhou will provide Chinese processors with fast access to custom compounds that meet UL, NSF, FDA, CSA, ISO, SAE and other requirements for competing in export markets," said Cheah Sin Hua, managing director of SPC. "At the same time this new venture represents our first step in building local capacity to supply the fast-growing Chinese domestic market."

The plant thus far includes two compounding lines with a combined initial nameplate capacity of 14,000 tons per year. Additional capacity will come on stream within the next two years, according to Bertram M. Lederer, executive vice president of Teknor Apex.

"The Suzhou initiative is the latest in an ongoing series of expansions and acquisitions that has established Teknor Apex as a single source for customers that process in different locations around the world and require precisely the same compounds at each one," Mr. Lederer said. "In addition, our product line is now so wide-ranging that we can supply many of these customers with multiple compounds as far different as, for example, a rigid glass-reinforced nylon and a soft, rubber-like TPE."

Teknor Apex now operates production facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia. The company acquired SPC in 2001 and has since transferred technologies to SPC for the manufacture of Teknor Apex vinyl or TPE compounds, as well as the ETP compounds of Chem Polymer, which Teknor Apex acquired at the end of 2004. This year, besides starting up the Suzhou plant, Teknor Apex has begun production of TPEs in the UK and is adding a new ETP compounding line in the U.S.A.
