Siemens Water Technologies Helps Communities Navigate through Cost-Effective Equipment Choices to Comply with New Regulations

Warrendale, Pa., June 11, 2006 -- Complying with the new U.S. EPA regulations for surface and ground waters requires a complete understanding of the regulations and a comprehensive range of innovative, cost-effective solutions. Finding the best-suited solutions for regulatory compliance can be challenging for communities. As part of the American Water Works Association Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE), Siemens Water Technologies' water experts will be on hand to help communities navigate through the many technology choices. New, innovative technologies from Siemens will be on display at the conference June 11-14, 2006 in San Antonio, Texas.

To reduce health risks from surface water sources (and groundwaters under the influence of surface water), the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) aims to control Cryptosporidium and other disease-causing microorganisms in systems vulnerable to its occurrence. Because Cryptosporidium is more resistant to conventional chemical disinfection methods such as chlorination, communities are selecting alternative disinfection methods like Barrier M ultraviolet (UV) or chlorine dioxide systems from Siemens. Additionally, unconventional physical removal processes, such as membrane filtration, are also a widespread market trend when additional treatment objectives must be met. The Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproduct Rule (Stage 2 DBP rule) focuses on public health protection by limiting exposure to DBPs which can form in water through certain disinfectants used to control microbial pathogens. Siemens compliance solutions include alternative disinfectants such as chlorine dioxide, chloramines and Barrier M UV disinfection systems, and physical methods such as the widely-accepted Memcor membranes and the new multi-barrier approach delivered through the Trident HSC filtration system.

The proposed Ground Water Rule applies to public water systems serving ground water and provides protection against microbial pathogens. The EPA has also set standards for the levels of inorganic contaminants found in drinking water, including arsenic and radium. Managing the risk to communities from pathogens and inorganic contaminants requires special considerations and technologies. Solutions for removing inorganic contaminants include the widely used GFH arsenic removal media and ion exchange resins for radium. Solutions for the proposed Ground Water Rule include custom Memcor membrane units and our cost-effective Centrol filters.

Siemens Water Technologies will also exhibit its groundwater remediation services which are helping communities clean up ground water contaminated by MTBE and Perchlorate. Specialty material and turn-key services include ion exchange resins, granular activated carbon and customized remediation services. Siemens Water Technologies also offers temporary mobile water treatment systems, which can provide a rapid, cost-effective solution when faced with scheduled maintenance shutdowns, seasonal water, changes, raw water quality changes, or changes in treated water requirements.

Declining water availability and deteriorating water quality is spurring water management projects. Wastewater recycling is widely adopted in almost every state. Some states have developed water recycling regulations, similar to the original California Code of Regulations Title 22, which sets bacteriological water quality standards on the basis of the expected degree of public contact with recycled water, and may require either disinfected tertiary treatment or multiple levels of secondary treatment. Water management solutions at ACE 06 from Siemens will include the Memcor membrane bioreactor (MBR), Memcor membranes, Astrasand continuous backwash filters and Gravisand traveling bridge filter.
