Siemens Receives Major Order for Offshore Wind Farm in Denmark

Erlangen, 2007-Dec-20

Siemens Power Generation (PG) has signed a contract with Danish energy company Dong Energy A/S for the supply of 91 wind turbines to extend the existing Horns Rev offshore wind farm in the North Sea off the Danish coast. With a total capacity of more than 200 megawatts (MW), this is the largest order Siemens has ever received for offshore wind turbines.

Installation of the wind turbines for the Horns Rev II project is expected to begin in early 2009, with startup slated for the end of 2009. The 91 wind turbines, with a capacity of 2.3 MW each, will be installed offshore at water depths of nine to 17 meters. The contract between Dong Energy and Siemens covers delivery and installation of the turbines, as well as a service and maintenance agreement.

"We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract by Dong Energy, which marks the continuation of our long-standing and successful relationship," said Andreas Nauen, head of Siemens' Wind Power Division. "This order is also an important signal to the international market with regard to the expansion of Danish wind power capacity - both when it comes to positioning Denmark in the rapidly growing offshore wind power market, and particularly for the global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions."

This is the sixth offshore wind farm Siemens will provide to Dong Energy. Siemens recently signed a contract with Dong for 30 3.6-MW turbines for the Gunfleet Sands project off the British coast. This year, Siemens also completed the Burbo Banks offshore wind project with 25 3.6-MW turbines off the coast of Liverpool.

"With the signing of this contract, all major agreements concerning the Horns Rev II project are in place," said Per Holmgaard, CEO of Dong Energy. "This means that we can now look forward to installation of Denmark's largest offshore wind farm".
