Shock Control White Paper for Portable Electronics Designers

(Indianapolis, IN) "Shock Control for Portable Electronics", a white
paper created by E-A-R Specialty Composites, is now available for
download at earshockandvibe.com/whitepapers. This systematic review
of the underlying science of shock and damping was created by E-A-R
Specialty Composites to bring designers of portable electronics
up-to-speed on how to approach shock control in small multi-featured
electronics products.

The "Shock Control for Portable Electronics" white paper reviews
relationships of drop height, floor surfaces, product materials and
other factors to shock events. Useful equations for utilizing the
shock transmissibility spectra for varying shock inputs and damping
situations, among other formulas that help determine best approaches to
damping are explained. Examples from PC designs, hard drives, LCD
protection are used to illustrate the relative benefits of highly damped
elastomer materials in protecting portable electronics during shock
events. Design tips on how to best incorporate effective damped mounts
into product designs are also covered.

Peter A. Masterson, Senior Applications Engineer with E-A-R Specialty
Composites explains that end-users are driving this demand for better
shock controls in portable electronics. "Today's consumer wants cell
phones, PDAs, notebook computers and other portable electronics devices
to be smaller but with more features. Dropping these small products is
quite common, however, and no matter how small and multi-featured your
products are, if they break down due to what consumers consider to be
minor shock events they will not be competitive products."

E-A-R Specialty Composites (www.earsc.com) manufactures proprietary,
high performance plastics and foams-vinyls, urethanes and rubbers-for
noise, vibration and shock control. E-A-R Specialty Composites
maintains headquarters and a production facility in Indianapolis,
Indiana, a plant in Newark, Delaware, near Philadelphia, and additional
sales, engineering and design support in Asia.
