Severn Trent Services' SmartMeter Wins Aquatech Innovation Award

The company's MicroDynamics® microwave UV disinfection system also nominated for an Innovation award; Severn Trent Services was the only company to receive two nominations.

CHESTERFIELD, United Kingdom - November 12, 2008 - The SmartMeter(TM) SM150VR+ Intelligent Water Meter from Severn Trent Services received the Aquatech Innovation Award in the Process Control Technology and Process Automation category at Aquatech Amsterdam, held 30 September through 3 October. The company's MicroDynamics® microwave ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system also was nominated for an Innovation Award in the Water Treatment category, making Severn Trent Services the only company to receive two Innovation Award nominations.

Aquatech Amsterdam is one of a group of the world's leading trade exhibitions showcasing process, drinking and wastewater technology. A biannual event, Aquatech Amsterdam, is the largest of these exhibitions.

The SmartMeter(TM) SM150VR+ has a 15-year battery life. Its life-long accuracy provides significant savings in whole-life costs when compared to traditional meters which slow down with age. A major benefit of the SM150VR+ is the ability to upgrade to an encoded output, which enables the meter to be read using an AMR (automatic meter reading) device. This ensures that billing data is correct and enables meters to be read without requiring access to the property.

This is the first meter to have a built in induction touch read capability. This is a standard feature, allowing utilities to take the first step towards AMR at no added cost for the meter. This instant electronic read functionality lends itself to "doorstep billing", the first water meter to offer such a system to accelerate the meter reading and billing process. Advantages of doorstep billing include reduced billing costs for the water company; confirmation of bill receipt; accurate bills based on actual, rather than estimated, data; electronic data input; instant print out of the bill; and faster receipt of payment.

The MicroDynamics microwave UV disinfection system offers significantly improved reliability and bulb life compared to traditional UV systems, resulting in lower overall operating costs. The microwave UV technology enables the use of electrodeless bulbs, dramatically increasing system efficiency and bulb life when compared to traditional UV lamps. All systems are modular, with a small footprint and use the same parts and components for easier maintenance and lower operating costs. The operating costs of MicroDynamics systems can be as little as half of competing UV technologies, primarily driven by significant reductions in maintenance costs.

Severn Trent Services supplies both closed-vessel and open-channel microwave UV systems.
