Severn Trent Services Receives Business Achievement Award from Environmental Business Journal for Two Advances in Water and Wastewater Treatment Technology
FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. - February 12, 2009 - Severn Trent Services received the Environmental Business Journal's (EBJ) Technology Merit Award in the Water/Wastewater category as part of the Journal's 2008 EBJ Business Achievement Awards. The company was recognized for two advances in municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment technology: a biological nutrient removal system and a microwave-based ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system. The award will be presented by EBJ, a leading business newsletter for the environmental industry, at the 2009 Environmental Industry Summit, February 18-20, 2009, in Coronado, Calif.
The annual EBJ Business Achievement Awards program recognizes firms for their strong financial performance and growth as well as for specific projects or other business achievements, which are significant in the advancement of the environmental industry.
Severn Trent Services' patented biologically active reactor system utilizes a three-stage biofiltration method consisting of a pre-denitrification process for the first stage, followed by a biological aerated filter for the second stage and a Denite® denitrification filter for the polishing filter. This system can be added to an existing or new facility, improving efficiency and minimizing space usage. A two-month pilot study in Jiashan, China, demonstrated that the system was able to deliver final effluent quality that met the country's new Class IA Effluent Discharge Standards. The successful pilot study led to the design and construction of a 20,000 cubic-meter-per-day wastewater treatment plant in Jiashan.
The company's MicroDynamics(TM) microwave UV disinfection system uses microwaves from unique electrode-less lamps to generate monochromatic UV light. With electrodeless lamps, there are no electrical connections to fail, corrode or leak, increasing safety and reducing required maintenance. The lifespan of the lamps potentially exceeds 30,000 hours, minimizing waste and reducing operating costs.
