Selco's LED Poultry Grow Lights Shine Bright for Energy Performance Index on Commercial Poultry Production Lighting Study

Reno, NV - In a new LED Lighting study on poultry broiler house production conducted by the University of Arkansas (UA), Selco Products had the highest 'Average Energy Performance Index' among the LED vendors and different types of lights tested for Poultry Grow-Out Lights. Selco's LEDs performed with the lowest energy consumption for Grow Lighting. These results are based on the latest findings from three poultry flocks tested over a five month period in the UA's LED Lighting Evaluation with Commercial Poultry Production study. Additional flocks are currently being tested and additional findings are expected to be reported in August 2012.

UA's Division of Agriculture Poultry Science Applied Broiler Research Farm (ABRF) included numerous houses in the study and LED bulbs from five manufacturers. The ABRF monitored daily usage of feed, water, electricity and propane. Each broiler house was equipped with three electrical meters to log lighting, fans, motors and total usage.

The study to date shows that bird growth under LED Grow Lighting is comparable or better than previous forms of lighting and that LED technology reduces energy consumption by as much as 80% compared to incandescent bulbs and lasts much longer than DCFL (dimmable compact fluorescent bulbs). The DCFL bulbs are noted for their high failure rate under dimming conditions. These results offer a valuable cost-saving alternative, as lighting is a significant energy cost for poultry producers.

"Our LED Grow Lights were designed to be the most durable, longest lasting, and with the lowest power consumption for poultry house usage," says Peter Ranalli, Selco Products Senior Vice President. "With these UA findings thus far, Selco's Poultry Grow lights have proven to be the leader in energy savings. Poultry producers are searching for better solutions over incandescent and DCFL lamps that simply do not last under poultry house conditions. Our LEDs provide that solution."

For the UA study, Selco provided the Model LL30-S120D AC LED Light, which features a low power consumption of 7.2 watts maximum, 525 lumens minimum at full power and a 5,000 Kelvin bulb. The LL30's well thought-out design separates the LED components from the internal power supply for better heat dissipation throughout the light housing assembly. This highly efficient thermal design keeps the LED components cool with minimum degradation of light shift and light output over the life of the grow-out light, providing less stress on each device resulting in much longer life. Expected service life is 10 years for Poultry Grow Lighting using dimming methods.

Other important features of the Selco LL30 include double-seal design for water and gaseous ingress protection. The sealed LED chips and silicon housing gasket are built to withstand high liquid pressure cleaning and provide protection against toxic and corrosive gases that are common to poultry production. This design does not use heavy or bulky heat sinks that collect dust and debris and provides a smooth housing for easy cleaning and wipe down. Constructed of high impact/shatterproof polycarbonate lens, the LEDs contain no glass, making them virtually hammer-proof.

Selco offers the LED Grow-out Light Model LL30 for poultry broiler houses and the LED Model LL20 for poultry layer houses. Both models are available for use in 120 VAC and 220 VAC standard E26/27 sockets and are fully dimmable with most all SCR or IGBT phase control dimming systems.

"Selco's new LED lights offer the poultry industry a tremendous opportunity for energy savings," says Ranalli. "Actual true savings includes not only reduction in energy consumption, but much longer light life reduces bulb replacements which decreases labor costs associated with frequent replacement of incandescent and DCFL lighting."
