Seco to Set New Standards in Cutting Tool Performance at CMTS 2015

TROY, Mich. – At CMTS 2015 in booth 4206, Seco Tools, LLC will showcase product innovations that bring a new standard of cutting performance to turning and milling operations. These innovations include steel-turning grades that balance toughness and hardness, highfeed milling cutters with more teeth per tool, and milling grades that eliminate built-up edge in titanium machining.

Setting the stage for Niagara Cutter, LLC, Seco will showcase new tools from the Niagara brand in its booth, including a solid-carbide drill with an enhanced multipurpose geometry and six-flute end mills that excel in high-speed milling applications and peel milling operations.

Duratomic® TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501 Turning Grades

Available in a range of insert sizes and geometries to accommodate everything from roughing to finishing operations, Seco’s new TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501 turning grades achieve the elusive balance of toughness and hardness when machining steel alloys, cast irons and stainless steels.

The grades represent an evolution and expansion of Seco’s original Duratomic technology, first introduced in 2007 as the industry’s first textured, á-based Al2O3 coating. The Duratomic CVD aluminium-oxide coating process manipulates coating components at an atomic level to achieve improved mechanical and thermal properties and enhance performance.

By featuring next-generation Duratomic technology, the TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501 combine the benefits of advanced aluminum-oxide coatings with specially developed compositions of the tools’ bulk substrates and cobalt-enriched zones. Modifications of those elements make the new grades both tougher and more wear resistant than their predecessors, across the board.

The grades also come with used-edge detection technology where each one has an approximately 0.1µm-thick chrome-colored coating. Black aluminum oxide showing through the chrome-colored coating clearly identifies a used insert edge and allows operators on busy shop floors to easily spot them. Also key is that the high-contrast used-edge marks do not impact tool performance or machining-related parameters such as cutting data. As a result, manufacturers can process more parts per edge, limit production interruptions and reduce waste.

Highfeed 2 and 4 Milling Cutters

Seco has expanded its Highfeed indexable-insert milling cutter lineup to include the new Highfeed 2 small-diameter cutter and Highfeed 4 cutter with double-sided inserts. Both cutters incorporate new insert designs combined with more teeth per diameter, allowing them to excel in high-velocity, high-speed cutting of hard and tough-to machine materials.

Highfeed 2 features LP05 single-sided inserts with two cutting edges for cutter bodies that range from 0.5" to 0.75" in diameter. Available in three different geometries, these positive LP inserts easily handle sticky materials such as stainless steels, titanium and super alloys. They are also a first choice for applications that require a higher ramping angle or superior plunging performance.

Highfeed 4 features LO06 double-sided inserts with four cutting edges for cutter bodies that range from 1.00" to 2.50" in diameter. Available in four different insert geometries, these close-pitch and negative-pocket LP inserts cost effectively machine common workpiece materials.

MS2050 Milling Grade

Seco added new variations to its MS2050 milling grade of inserts for optimized titanium machining. The additions span a wider scope of sizes, radii and geometries along with special coating technology. A new silver-colored PVD uni-coating not only gives the MS2050 inserts added heat resistance capabilities but practically eliminates the occurrence of built-up edge when cutting sticky materials. As result, the inserts last approximately 50 percent longer and run at higher cutting data as compared with existing inserts.

Niagara Universal Drill

Niagara Cutter, a subsidiary of Seco Tools, LLC, has introduced a new solid-carbide Universal Drill that features a rigid, multi-purpose geometry and advanced coating technology. The combination ensures machining versatility, predictable tool life and the lowest cost per hole, especially in high-volume production environments. Available in drill diameter sizes from 3 mm to 20 mm and in increments of 0.1 mm, the Niagara Universal Drill is well suited for a range of holemaking applications involving steel, stainless steel and cast iron workpiece materials.

Niagara S638 and S638R Multi-Flute End Mills

Niagara Cutter, a subsidiary of Seco Tools, LLC, has expanded its line of multi-flute end mills for high-speed milling applications and peel milling strategies with the new S638 and S638R six-flute tools. Capable of taking larger radial cuts than seven and nine-flute end mills, the S638 and S638R have a heat and abrasion-resistant AlTiN coating that promotes long tool life, high metal removal rates, cycle time reductions and increased throughput. Top product features include an eccentric O.D. relief that enhances cutting edge strength and variable indexing that reduces harmonics for a smoother cut and excellent surface finish. Diameters for these end mills range from 0.375" to 1" with up to 2.5 times the diameter of flute length. These tools also feature common aerospace radii and a dead sharp option.

Applications Expertise

Seco applications experts will be available at CMTS 2015 to speak with manufacturers and share strategies for controlling chip flow and maximizing turning productivity, maintaining tight tolerances, implementing complex machining strategies for high material removal rates and much more.
