SCA Tissue Selects Seasoned Hand as Director of Employee Relations

PHILADELPHIA, January 7, 2009 - SCA Tissue North America has named Jim Carmichael Director, Employee Relations.

Carmichael brings 30 years of paper industry experience to the job with expertise in the areas of labor and employment law, labor management and human resources in management positions. He will be based in Philadelphia.

"Our unique partnership with the United Steel Workers union, which represents most of our hourly employees, makes this key position a difficult one to fill," said Kyle Brock, SCA Tissue Vice President, Human Resources. "Jim has the experience and skill set to embrace and develop this strategic direction. We feel very fortunate to have him join our team in this critical role."

"Most of my efforts will be focused on working with issues involving our union-represented employees, but my role also includes participation in issues and programs that affect our salaried personnel," said Carmichael. "I am very pleased to be part of a company with such a progressive approach to labor relations and human resource management."

SCA Tissue's labor practices and workplace policies have earned it praise from the American Rights at Work, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates for the rights of U.S. workers to organize and bargain collectively. ARW named SCA Tissue to its prestigious Labor Day List in 2007, citing the company's record of working cooperatively with its unionized employees on workplace issues such as safety.

ARW also praised the company's creation of a Joint Advisory Committee of company executives and union leaders who meet quarterly to cooperatively address challenges in the workplace and highlight joint successes. The partnership program led to successful redesign of work systems at three key manufacturing facilities by utilizing worker input to create a more efficient and worker-friendly production process.

"Jim will continue to support our positive relationship with the United Steel Workers and help bring that partnership to the next level while also helping us reach our broader human resource and business goals," Brock said.

SCA Tissue is a leading manufacturer of paper napkins, tissues, towels and wipers used in commercial settings such as restaurants, office buildings, schools and healthcare facilities. The company has annual sales of $1 billion and total employment of approximately 2,400 people. Headquartered in Philadelphia, SCA Tissue has manufacturing and office facilities in Wisconsin, Alabama, Arizona and upstate New York.
