Safety Components Awarded for Two Projects at IFAI

The Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) announced the 2013 International Achievement Awards (IAA) for design excellence in specialty fabrics applications. Two projects using Safety Components' WeatherMax outdoor performance fabric received an Award of Excellence in the Sailboat Exterior Category and an Outstanding Achievement Award in the Commercial Awnings and Canopies, more than 900 sq. ft. category. The winners were named at the IFAI Specialty Fabrics Expo 2013 and Advanced Textiles Conference Trade Show at the Orlando Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Custom Marine Canvas of Noank, Connecticut won in the marine category after WeatherMax fabric was used to create a mid deck awning for the USCGC Eagle. This very active vessel needed sun and rain protection for its 80' x 40' main area. The crew requested a white canopy that could stay clean and be easy and quick to put up and take down. Built in two sections to accommodate mast and rigging, the biggest challenge was lining the sections up in a seamless manner.

For the commercial awning achievement, WeatherMax FR was used on the Intuit Campus Center - San Jose in Mountain View, California by Bel Aire Engineering. Four architectural canopies needed to be added to the building, while providing natural light and shelter. The canopies needed to shed water to a drain at the building's edge to a gutter with little slope.

After research, Safety Components' WeatherMax was chosen for the job because it had the best hydro test results, while still having a woven fabric look.

IFAI received a total of 236 entries from 13 countries that were submitted for 29 categories in this year's competition. Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and function. Judges included industry experts, editors, architects, educators and design professionals who were chosen for their knowledge in a particular field of study or product area.

The International Achievement Awards competition is sponsored by IFAI, a not-for-profit trade association whose 1,800 member companies represent the international specialty fabrics and technical textiles marketplace.
