Safe, Smart and Sustainable for All

Saint-Gobain extends the bio-based, phthalate-free technology of Tygon S3™ to its entire portfolio of tubing solutions for food and beverage products

Akron, OHIO – The Process Systems Business Unit at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics (SGPPL) announces that it has incorporated the technology behind Tygon S3™, a safe, smart and sustainable tubing solution, throughout its portfolio of tubing for food, beverage and dairy transfer and dispensing applications. Tygon S3™ is made from a bio-based material that is free of phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA) without sacrificing the high level of performance synonymous with the Tygon® brand.

"Food and beverage manufacturers are working within an increasingly complex regulatory environment where BPA and phthalates are highly scrutinized, but the standards applied to them can vary between regions," explains Iuliana Nita, Global Marketing Manager, Food and Beverage, Process Systems Business Unit at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics. "We engineered Tygon S3™ with the purpose of delivering peace of mind to end-users aiming to self-regulate the usage of these substances and stay ahead of the regulatory curve."

Saint-Gobain introduced Tygon S3™ in 2012 as the first bio-based and phthalate-free tubing solution that provides the same level of performance as other Tygon®-branded offerings for food and beverage applications. Tygon S3™ tubing also complies with FDA, NSF, 3-A, Japan Food Sanitation Law #370/1959, REACH, 1935/2004/EC and 10/2011/EU for many food and beverage applications. SGPPL performed validation according to the most restrictive food-contact regulations, leading to certified compliance, accompanied by the required conditions of use.

Additionally the bio-based plasticizers used in Tygon S3™ offer a more sustainable feedstock than fossil-fuel based sources. Late in 2013, Saint-Gobain released a recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of its Tygon S3™ line that confirmed Tygon S3™ B-44-3 was produced using less energy and omitting less carbon than market alternatives containing DEHP, illustrating how Tygon S3™ can contribute positively to the sustainability measures of eco-conscious manufacturers and brand owners.
