Riverside County Combats California Drought with Sensus Technology

FlexNet quickly identifies leaks for Eastern Municipal Water District

RALEIGH, N.C. – Employees of Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) are now equipped with tools to detect leaks sooner and contribute to California’s ongoing water conservation efforts. For example, water dripping from a concealed broken sprinkler head could have caused one customer’s bill to double. Within days of deploying new Sensus technology, EMWD staff identified the issue and notified the customer, preventing a substantial increase to their monthly bill and potential damage to their home.

With the implementation of the Sensus FlexNet® communication system, employees are empowered with continuous monitoring and usage reports. The staff at EMWD calls, emails or texts individuals to inform customers when they notice increases in their water usage. To date, they have helped more than 2,300 customers identify leaks in their homes.

“EMWD has a responsibility to implement industry-leading technologies that create an efficient environment and empower the customer to conserve water," said David Gayneaux, manager, meter services, EMWD. “By doing so, we are able to limit the water lost to leaks in an economically responsible manner."

Without FlexNet, EMWD leaders estimate it would take as many as eight additional staff members to manually read the meters of the utility’s 795,000 customers. With it, employees can instead focus their time on analyzing data and using insights gleaned to better serve customers and conserve water.

“Accurate meter reads and data monitoring are just the beginning of what we can do with FlexNet,” said Gayneaux. “We look forward to expanding our use of technology to better serve our customers, including the launch of a customer portal so that users can self-monitor their consumption.”
