Regional SMTA Chapters Benefit from Indium's Pb-Free Experience

Indium Corporation's Senior Technologist, Ronald C. Lasky, PhD, PE and Tim Jensen, Pb-Free Programs Manager, are scheduled to speak at several educational forums for regional North American SMTA Chapters to help prepare members for the European Union's directives for WEEE/RoHS compliance.

SMTA Chapters in Connecticut, Toronto, Utah, Kansas, Montreal, and New York have hosted Indium's Pb-Free experts throughout September, October and November. Additional forums are also scheduled in Oregon on November 16, New Mexico on Dec. 1, Michigan on Dec. 13, and Houston, TX on Jan 17, 2006. Chapters interested in hosting a Pb-Free educational forum can contact Tim Jensen at tjensen@indium.com or call 315-853-4900.

The educational forums consist of presentations on The Dartmouth Protocol for WEEE and RoHS Compliance and Best Practices in Implementing Pb-Free Assembly. The Dartmouth Protocol was developed by Dr. Lasky, a visiting professor at Dartmouth College, along with graduate students and alumni, in response to the growing need for a systematic approach to meeting the European Directive. The protocol provides a "cookbook" to help companies prepare and develop a plan for compliance with these directives. Best Practices in Implementing Pb-Free Assembly focuses on the "how to" of implementing Pb-Free at your factory. It covers issues such as PWB finishes, components, alloys and SMT processes. It also includes actual implementations of Pb-Free processes and presents significant data on process and product reliability.

Dr. Lasky, holder of the prestigious SMTA Founder's Award, is a world-renown process expert. He has over 20 years of experience in electronics and optoelectronic packaging and assembly. He has authored or edited five books and numerous technical papers, and holds several patent disclosures.

Jensen is an SMTA-Certified Process Engineer and internationally-known speaker on Pb-Free Surface Mount Technology (SMT) electronics assembly. He has spent over 7 years optimizing and troubleshooting SMT processes, and has worked directly on hundreds of surface mount lines, building thousands of different products. He specializes in helping customers through their Pb-Free transition. Tim has authored technical publications and numerous process and technical guidelines.
