Reflowing Solder on Copper Boards in Less than 5 Seconds Using UltraFlex Induction Heating

November 17th, 2017 - UltraFlex Power Technologies recently demonstrated the excellent performance of their compact Induction Heating systems by showing how copper boards can get re-soldered within less than 5 seconds.
A small copper connector board with dimensions 42mm x 17.5mm (1.65″ x 0.69″) and 3 pins on one side / 6 on the other had to be heated to 260°C (500°F) so solder on the board would re-flow.
UltraFlex 2 kW and 5 kW Induction Heating systems as well as a channel coil were used in the heating process. The coil is a custom-designed inductor designed to optimize the heating process for each specific application of the induction system.
In the demonstration, 3 different combinations of power and frequency were used to achieve the target temperature of 260°C (500°F).
Using power of 1.29 kW and frequency of 182 kHz, the target temperature was reached in 15 seconds. By increasing the power to 1.87 kW and the frequency to 313 kHz, the desired temperature was reached in 10 seconds. At power of 4.7 kW and frequency of 181 kHz, the heating temperature of 260°C (500°F) was reached in only 4.4 seconds.
The demonstration showed that a 2 kW UltraFlex power supply would let the solder re-flow in 10 seconds, while the 5 KW power supply would cut the needed solder reflow time more than half.
